New Zealand has a dozen or so mens' barbershop chapters and the chapters take it in turn to host the annual competitions in their home town or city.
At competition each chorus performs two songs and each song is judged in three categories - music, singing and presentation (though the presentation category is soon to be replaced by a "performance" category). Each judge scores his or her category out of 100, the total score is thus out of 600, or 1200 if there are two judges in each category.
A similar competition is held for quartets, but this competition is split into two rounds. The best seven quartets from the preliminary round then progress to the finals where they perform two more songs. Placing is then determined by the highest total score out of 1200, or 2400 if there are pairs of judges.
